What is a school lunch?

A school lunch is also called a Type A lunch and this definition is established by the USDA. A school lunch is comprised of 5 components that must be offered daily: meat/meat alternate (protein), grains/breads, fruits, vegetables, and milk.  A student may take all 5 components but must take a minimum of 3 to count as a student lunch.  It is our goal to encourage students to take all 5, but we are obligated to make sure they take at least 3 components.

The Universal Breakfast Program allows all students of the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District to eat breakfast at no cost.

The District uses a computerized Point of Sale (POS) system. Parents/Guardians can pre-pay for meals or milk. Parents/Guardians can send cash or a check in any amount. Money on student accounts can be used for lunch, or milk. Middle and high school students can also use it to buy a la carte items.

Parents/Guardians will be notified when their child’s balance falls below $6.75. The new POS system also has a comment box, where allergy information will be displayed. Parents/Guardians can request limits on a la carte money spent, or specify, for example, white milk only. Parents/Guardians also have the option of purchasing meals on a daily basis.

The high school and middle school students access their accounts with their student numbers, and their picture is also displayed. In the elementary buildings students are identified by the cafeteria manager with their name and picture or by their last name.
