Elementary Transition Information for Students and Families

A group of parents representing each elementary school, administrators, and PTA members has been meeting since September to organize a series of elementary-wide activities for students and families moving to new schools next year.  The group felt the activities would be most meaningful to students if held during the second semester and involved connections with other students and staff.  Click on the link below for your child’s school for the 2007-2008 school year for upcoming transition activities and more information on how to schedule a tour, and get questions answered about your new school.

Celebrate Coventry 2007With Coventry Elementary School closing at the end of this school year, you are invited to celebrate the school's history.  Along with transition activities, a separate effort to celebrate Coventry is underway.  Special days and productions are being planned to end the school year, including a Celebrate Coventry Play that will depict events at Coventry over each decade and will be done using a “Wizard of Oz” theme as the roadmap.

New Family Open HousesSchools have held or will hold an evening event for families to meet their new principal, other parents and students, get questions answered, and take tours of their new school building.  Making this personal connection with a family’s new school is essential and gets many questions answered for both parents and students.  Schools hope families will take advantage of these open houses.   Should the day not be convenient, parents are encouraged to call the school to schedule a personal tour.

Student AmbassadorsOne component of the transition activities has included student ambassadors traveling with their principal to meet incoming students at feeder schools.  These visits have been well received by students, as principals and the ambassadors are able to answer questions from students, allowing them to get a sense of what to expect next year.  These sessions have also reminded those in the planning process to look through the eyes of students, as several questions have revolved around whether or not a student’s new school has an art or music class, or recess.

Welcome to Elementary School DVDA series of video narratives entitled “Welcome to Elementary School” was produced that profiles the District’s elementary schools.  It features parents, students, teachers, and principals discussing what makes each school a special learning community.  DVD’s will be sent to each transitioning family to assist them in getting to know their new school.  Each video also airs three times a day on Time Warner Cable Channel 22, with exact air times available on the Channel 22 Schedule.
