Students Excel at Jr. Model UN
January 24, 2012
Cleveland Heights, OH

Junior Model UN delegates from all three CH-UH middle schools attended John Carroll University on January 11-12 and came back victorious. They worked hard to prepare for the simulation, sponsored by the Cleveland Council on World Affairs (CCWA). Each student worked with the other members of its delegation to research and complete a country profile, as well as individually develop a position paper on specific topics to be used by each delegate in one of the eight committee sessions.
Students joined over 270 students from 12 middle schools representing 53 countries. This year’s theme, “The Four Freedoms,” explored many of the global issues confronting world leaders today.
Delegates in each committee session met in morning and afternoon workshops during both days to make and hear speeches, exchange ideas, debate issues, and contribute to a resolution that would express their collected ideas and opinions. Discussions included promoting the development of renewable energy, the rights of small farmers in underdeveloped countries, child labor around the world, peace keeping in Africa, and micro-financing in less-developed countries.
At the end of the committee sessions, each of the committee chairs, assistant chairs, and the Model UN representative evaluated each delegation based on their knowledge of the topics and their country, participation in the debates, resolution writing, and consistent role play as country ambassadors. Awards range from Honorable Mention up to a Superior Performance rating. One delegate from each committee who makes the greatest contribution to activities during the committee sessions is awarded the Chair’s Gavel.
