Black History Month Activities

The Cleveland Heights-University Heights students will participate in a variety of learning activities to celebrate the achievements of African Americans during the month of February.

Canterbury Elementary School
This year’s theme for Black History Month is “Tomorrow Needs Us.” An assembly at the end of the month will feature each grade level showcasing a project, song, play, etc. showcasing what they have learned this month. The fourth grade will present their annual “Famous African American Wax Museum.” Students will research and select a famous person to represent as a wax figure. The figures come to life and explain who they were and their contributions.

Fairfax Elementary School
To celebrate Black History Month, third through fifth grade students at Fairfax will participate in a Writing Contest: Poem or Paragraph, on “What does Black History mean to me?”  There will also be a school wide Black History Art Contest. Students will choose a person or event in history and use various mediums to display: color, pencil, paint, chalk. Winners will be announced at the Fairfax Elementary School’s Black History Assembly with PAWS awards at the end of the month.

Gearity Professional Development School
Gearity school will have a Black History assembly on Friday morning, February 3, from 9:30-10:30 and again from 10:45-11:45. They will emphasize history and music during these assemblies. 

Monticello Middle School
Friday, February 3, Monticello Middle School will have its opening assembly to celebrate Black History Month.  Throughout the month of February, the school will have many contests, trivia games, and other activities. On Wednesday, February 29, Monticello will hold its summary address to close out Black History Month.

Roxboro Middle School
Roxboro Middle School will present a student performance of a short play called Freedom Riders to the whole school on February 24. Roxboro students will also create a walk-through display of African- American history.

Cleveland Heights High School
On Friday, February 17, at 6 p.m. in the Heights Social room and auditorium, the Parent Connection Council will host a Black History event that will include the high school MSAN (Minority Student Achievement Network) students in a debate (in the style of the movie The Great Debaters) and music from the time period, performed by Heights High students, including the Gospel Choir. Middle School MSAN students will showcase leaders of the period in display boards and videos. There will also be a Soul Food contest for the best chicken, mac and cheese, and sweet potato pie. Art teacher Jerome White will have students create murals of the time period. Social Studies teacher Nate Williams will MC the event.

Bellefaire
Bellefaire will have a host of activities to celebrate Black History Month. Tuesday, February 7, at 10:45-11:25 a.m., Bellefaire students and staff will participate in Blackademic Show. Contestants will participate in a series of academic activities to showcase their knowledge of African American history. Monday, February 13, the Cleveland Browns' Bobby Vega will visit from 9:25-10:10 a.m. On Thursday, February, 16, Bellefaire will present, “Moments in African-American History” at 10:45-11:25 a.m.
