CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH -
The AMC 8 is a 25 question, 40 minute multiple choice examination in mathematics designed to promote the development and enhancement of problem solving skills. This school year it was held Tuesday, November 17, 2009. 93 of our 5th grade ACT Math students and 335 of our middle school students participated.
The examination provides an opportunity to apply the concepts taught in the classroom to problems which not only range from easy to difficult, but also cover a wide range of applications. Many problems are designed to challenge students and to offer problem solving experiences beyond those provided in most junior high school mathematics classes.
Additional purposes of the AMC 8 are to promote excitement, enthusiasm, and positive attitudes towards mathematics and to stimulate interest in continuing the study of mathematics beyond the minimum required for high school graduation. “This contest provides an opportunity for some of our most capable math students to compete on an international level and receive recognition for their achievement,” said Rebecca Quinn, Director of Gifted, Enrichment, and Middle Level Education.
The following Cleveland Heights-University Heights students had the highest score within their respective schools and were designated as school winners by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA):
