CH-UH Middle Schools Shine at Junior Model United Nations

January 25, 2010
CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH
- Student teams from the three Cleveland Heights - University Heights School District middle schools made a strong showing at the recent Junior Model United Nations program. The Junior Model United Nations was conducted by the Cleveland Council on World Affairs and was held at John Carroll University on January 7 and 8, 2010.

Students from Wiley, Monticello, and Roxboro Middle Schools won a majority of the awards at the event. Roxboro teams are coached by Janet Lechleitner and Kathy Pahys; Wiley is coached by Paige Baublitz-Watkins; and Monticello is coached by Deborah Frost.

The theme for the conference was “Reevaluation & Collective Reconstruction as a Global Community.” Students were broken into countries and committees, and then created research-based position papers on topics relevant to their committee from the perspective of the country they were representing. The students were then grouped by their committees and debated their assigned topics using the information from their position papers.

“We are very proud of our students and thrilled that they did so well at the Junior Model United Nations,” Superintendent Doug Heuer said. “This program teaches crucial skills like research, persuasive writing, collaborative work, debate, and a better appreciation for the diversity of our world.”
