CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH -
Teacher and boys cross country coach, Claude Holland, has won numerous honors over the years, but his recent award is surely one of the most notable. Coach Holland has been recognized for his outstanding achievements by the Cleveland Cavaliers through their Head of the Class award program.
The Head of the Class program recognizes teachers in Northeast Ohio for making a difference in their students’ lives both inside and outside the classroom. Teachers are nominated by their principals or peers, and the winners are chosen based on their outstanding contributions to education. In this case, Coach Holland was nominated by Crystal Maclin, Program Specialist for the Transition Program at Cleveland Heights High.
Maclin beams when she talks about her colleague. “I nominated Mr. Holland because of his amazing work in the Transition program. He is so committed to the track team, and his attitude of service toward the staff and students is infectious.” Maclin continues on, “He is extremely giving of his time and finances because he wants the students to have all the hope and encouragement they need for a successful, fulfilling future.” Mr. Holland also oversees the APEX lab, which offers online courses for enrichment or credit recovery.
The Cav’s on-court host Ahmaad Crump and team mascot Moondog surprised Mr. Holland with the announcement at his school in front of his students on Friday, January 15. Mr. Holland will also be honored for his achievements at the Cavs game on February 9 at the Q. Mr. Holland received two tickets to the February 9 game, dinner for two, and a parking pass.
“I’m very surprised and truly honored! I love my work; it’s all about the students and the great people I work with. Although the recognition is not necessary, it does feel good. Thank you, Crystal Maclin, for the nomination; thank you Cavs for the cool award; and most importantly, thanks to all the students and staff here at Heights High for making my work so enjoyable!”
