Award Promotes Diversity in Teaching Ranks

Jan. 17, 2017 -- Heights High English teacher Bridget Lambright was named the first Ohio Council of Teachers of English Language Arts (OCTELA) Teacher Ambassador.

As the Teacher Ambassador, Ms. Lambright will partner with Monticello Middle School English teacher Yolanda Harris (OCTELA Executive Board member) and other board members to increase the pool of highly-qualified teachers of color in Ohio.

To that end, Ms. Lambright developed a Future Teacher Mentoring Program for Heights High that will support students of color who are interested in exploring the teaching profession.

The Mentoring Program will provide interested students with skill development and support to tutor/mentor other students of color.

Ms. Lambright will be recognized at the 2017 OCTELA Spring Conference, in Worthington, Ohio on February 3 & 4. She will also present a K-12 professional development session for K-12 English Language Arts teachers that will describe her plan.

OCTELA is a non-profit organization supports professional development for Ohio Language Arts teachers. The organization’s goals are: to promote best practice and teacher leadership, advocate for fair and appropriate education policy and provide resources and quality professional development that support diverse literacies, classrooms and students.

The Ambassador Award is made possible by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Dream Affiliate Award.
