Canterbury’s All Geared Up Event Wins Award

June 10, 2016 -- Canterbury Elementary School’s District-wide All Geared Up event won a Gold Medal at the June 2 the Greater Cleveland Trails and Greenways Conference Showcase.

The award recognized the event as "A Game Changer in Advancing Active Living and Transportation in Northeast Ohio."

The All Geared Up Team: Sarah O'Keeffe (PTA & Heights Bicycle Coalition), Julie Lustic (PE Teacher), Erica Wigton (Canterbury Principal), Darren Carter (Event Coordinator and Canterbury Parent), Pam Cameron (University Heights City Council) and Michelle Bandy-Zalatoris (PTA).

Showcase recognized infrastructure, programs and events that encourage physical fitness and healthy lifestyles, non-motorized transportation and make communities better places.

The May 14 All Geared Up event was spearheaded by Canterbury parent Darren Carter.

Thanks to Canterbury Principal Erica Wigton, Physical Education teacher Julie Lustic, the cities of Cleveland Heights and University Heights, PTA parents Michelle Bandy-Zalatoris and Sarah O'Keeffe, Cleveland Heights Police Bicycle Unit, the Ohio Chapter of the American Association of Pediatrics who donated 108 bike helmets, Heights Bicycle Coalition and countless volunteers.

The 4th Biennial Greater Cleveland Trails and Greenways Conference brought together decision makers, planners and practitioners, and trail advocates from around Greater Cleveland to share ideas, discover new tools, and set the stage to transform plans and concepts into successfully completed projects.

By recognizing best practices, like the All geared Up event, the organization hopes to see successful events and programs replicated in other communities.
