Students Present 'Go Green' Ideas to UH

June 8, 2016 -- Five Heights High Freshman Co-taught Biology classes presented their Go Green University Heights project suggestions to a panel of adults at John Carroll University, and three of the groups presented their ideas to the University Heights City Council.

The 26 student groups of 3-4 students presented their ideas at JCU to a panel of adults on May 25 & 26.

Evan Pitts, Jumal Fisher (L-R) present their Go Green ideas to add sustainability information to the UH website. UH Clerk of Council Kelly M. Thomas and City Council Members John Rach and Mark Wiseman,(L-R) listen to the student ideas.

The adults included JCU professors and staff, community members, Heights High parents and staff and a University Heights city council member, Mark Wiseman.

After Mr. Wiseman heard the presentations, he arranged for an invitation to the students to repeat three of the presentations at a University Heights City Council meeting.

The science teachers Janette Korb and Samantha Greene were thrilled to have their students present at the city council meeting. “We are so proud that our students were honored with this invitation,” said Ms. Korb.

On June 6, three groups of budding scientists presented their ideas to the University Heights City Council: installing composting toilets at Gearity Elementary, installing Co-Go bike share stations in the community and modifying the University Heights webpage to inspire citizens to embrace sustainability practices.

After the presentations, Councilman John Rach spoke to the student presenters.

“I am very impressed with your presentations,” he said. “Thank you for challenging us to work on these issues. You are tomorrow’s leaders and we appreciate your input.”

Mayor Susan Infeld said that the major issue that the council is currently considering concerns water and that it was fitting that one of the presentations addressed water conservation.

“Thank you for the wonderful presentations,” she said.
