May 20, 2016 --For 38 Heights High students, their hard work, strong character and perseverance paid off with a personal recognition from a teacher at the May 19 Teachers’ Choice Awards.

Teachers nominated one student who they felt had earned recognition for their classroom performance.

“We are recognizing students who have done the right thing,” Administrative Principal Zoraba Ross told the event attendees.

Speaking to the students and their families, he said, “We want you to know that we love you and are very proud of you.”

Last week, families were notified by event organizer Assistant Principal Jane Simeri that their student would be recognized at the awards ceremony and that the school wanted to surprise the students.

When students and their families arrived, they entered the cafeteria on a red carpet and had their photo taken in front of a Teachers’ Choice Awards backdrop.

Family members, the student and the student’s teacher sat together at tables decorated in the school colors as each group enjoyed a buffet dinner.

Then the main event began.

Each teacher talked about the student who they recognized. Teachers spoke about the students’ growth in their academic, emotional and social life.

They talked with pride and affection as they described how each student contributed to their classroom and the ways that the students have affected the lives of teachers.

Several teachers shed a few tears and many spoke of their partnership with the student’s parents.

The teachers presented each student with a Teachers’ Choice Award medallion and certificate. The student then presented a single red rose to their parent.

Several parents also publicly thanked the teachers for all of their work and support of the students.

Principal Ross closed the event and thanked the families for coming. “We appreciate you and your contributions to our school,” he said.
