Students Get Hands-On Experience in Health Care Careers

May 17, 2016 -- Fifteen Clinical Health Careers students recently completed the Cleveland Clinic’s three-day “Health Careers Boot Camp,” where they learned about a variety of paths in the medical field.

The students spoke with employees in occupational therapy, nursing, emergency medicine, pediatrics, Intensive Care Unit and surgery about their careers. In addition, they were able to practice patient care using human “simulators” – computer-programmed manikins that talk, breath, have pulses, turn blue, and even have cardiac arrests. Students performed vital signs, electrocardiograms, CPR, defibrillating, and using and removing an IV line.

"The students loved the hands on part with the simulators. It opened their eyes to careers they had never considered, like occupational therapy and surgical tech. We also had a visit by a therapy dog, which was a big hit!" said Nancy Ballou, Clinical Health Careers instructor.

Clinical Health Careers is part of the Career and Technical Education program offered through the Tri-Heights Career Prep Consortium - schools in the collaboration include Cleveland Heights, Shaker Heights, and Warrensville Heights high schools.
