Staff Convocation Day Kicks Off 2015-16 School Year

Staff Convocation Day Kicks Off 2015-16 School Year

Superintendent Dr. Talisa L. Dixon welcomed staff and teachers to the new school year during Convocation Day, August 28 at Heights High in University Heights. Dr. Dixon outlined the District’s new Five-Year Strategic Plan – Heights 2020: The Path to Student Success.

The plan includes five measurable and achievable goals. Five student speakers: (L-R below) Emma Zordan, Akash Bartlett, Joyce Glenn, Michael Siemen and Aleysia Brooks, helped highlight the importance of those goals in their own words.

Some teachers also were recognized for mastery in teaching. The master teacher designation means that a teacher demonstrates excellence inside and outside of the classroom through consistent leadership and focused collaboration to maximize student learning. The teacher continuously strives for distinguished teaching and continued professional growth. The teacher also understands the content of her subject matter, is sensitive to diverse student needs, and sets the bar high for all students in an environment that allows them to achieve.

The Master Teachers are:

  • Vickie Larkins-Forte, Heights High English Teacher
  • Lorna Askew, Intervention Specialist at Monticello Middle School
  • Yolanda Harris, English Language Arts Teacher at Monticello Middle School
  • Katherine Lawrence, Media Specialist at Heights High
  • Lia Radke, 8th grade English Language Arts and Social Studies teacher at Roxboro Middle School
  • Karlene Sa’ad, Master Teacher Committee Chair and English Language Arts Support Staff member at Boulevard Elementary School
  • Melissa Strouth, Math teacher at Heights High.

    (The future is SO bright.)
