Rox El Students Give Record-Breaking Boost to AHA

Rox El Students Give Record-Breaking Boost to AHA

On April 2, to the theme "Eye of the Tiger," physical education teacher Mr. Nemeth announced that the efforts of Roxboro Elementary had broken the records of 168 schools in the American Heart Association's eastern region, including Cuyahoga, Lake, Medina, and Geauga Counties. Roxboro Elementary raised $10,654.74 to donate to the AHA; the number one total of all the schools in those counties.  There will be a Celebration Assembly on Friday, May 1 at 2:30 p.m. including the top fund-raisers tossing pies at faculty and staff.

In making the announcement, Mr. Nemeth remarked, "It took special parents and children to make this fund-raising event so successful.  I have never seen a group of students who were not only motivated to raise money for an excellent cause, but also enjoyed jump roping at the same time."  He continued, "I want to thank all the families, students, staff and community members that contributed toward this event.  We appreciate all of you and your child is SPECIAL!"

This year's Jump Rope Assembly kicked off on Friday, February 27. The fundraiser involves students getting pledges of support from family and friends in connection with jump-roping. They learn about heart health through exercise, gain coordination, and donate the proceeds to the American Heart Association fund for children with ailing hearts. The activity was lead by Mr. Nemeth.

As an International Baccalaureate World School, this activity was a natural to fit Roxboro Elementary's mission.  It's written here in kid-speak to allow our students access:  WHO WE ARE.  Roxboro Elementary kids with their moms, dads, friends and neighbors are becoming good at listening, having friends and caring about others for the rest of their lives.  Our school is part of a world with many different kinds of people and we are REALLY trying to learn about everything and everyone out there with questions, answers and thinking about all of this.  Roxboro kids speak for themselves, are proud of their choices, want to help each other and even help strangers by doing good things.

The AHA Jump Rope fund-raiser directed emphasis to the IB attributes of being risk-takers, principled, and caring.  IB attitudes were also evident in commitmentconfidence, empathy, enthusiasm, and independence.  These characteristics, through the Rox El students, were behind each penny of that incredible $10,654.74!  The school, the District, and the community can all be very proud of that.
