Facilities Committee Meeting October 23

Members of the Facilities Accountability Committee (FAC) met Thursday, October 23 at the Board of Education Office and received confirmation about their role and also an update on the High School Renovation Project.

See Agenda and Budget/Cost Report

Current FAC members made application last year for the position. The Board selected a cross section of community members, including the appointment of representatives from the municipalities of Cleveland Heights, University Heights and South Euclid.

Membership on the FAC is voluntary and responsibilities include: monitoring the implementation of the Facilities Master Plan; as well as reviewing the status of construction, financing and fundraising, following proposed and actual construction costs, and reviewing community engagement in school planning, construction contracting and construction workforce.

Update on Schematic Design of High School Renovation Project

There will be a facilities presentation to the Board on Monday, November 3, during the regularly scheduled board meeting at 7 p.m. (The meeting is being held on Monday, since Tuesday, November 4 is Election Day.) As with all of the regular Board meetings, public comments can be made at the beginning of the meeting.

The high school facilities presentation will include discussions about:

·        Two (2) Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) Plant Options

·        Site Parking at the Renovated High School

·        Career Technical Education (CTE) Spaces

The next three (3) Design Development Special meetings will take place:

  • November 18
  • December 16
  • January 13, 2015

The meetings will be at the Delisle Options Center at 7 p.m. Public comment is encouraged following the presentations. The Design Development Phase includes the more detail/specifics of the building design.

Safety & Security Plan at Wiley Campus

The Safety and Security Plan at the Wiley Campus for the temporary High School, beginning school year 2015-16, are still being worked out. The District presented a plan to the city of University Heights Planning Commission. The Commission has yet to vote on the plan. The District also has had discussions with the Cuyahoga County Sherriff’s Department about security at the Wiley Campus. No decision has been made.

South Euclid Councilman-at-large Marty Gelfand complimented the District for collaborating with the Sheriff’s Department to come up with an alternative security plan, adding that it’s thinking more regional--something many communities across the country are doing to be more resourceful and share costs.

Not moving the high school students to the Wiley Campus for the 2015-2016 school year, and delaying  construction at the high school would cost the District $8 million. University Heights Councilman Pamela Cameron says that delay should not happen. “I’ve talked with these students [high school students] and they are awesome children and they are worthy to be moved to a brighter future.”

The next FAC Meetings are on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Board Office.
