Two Artists Win Scholastic Awards

Two Mosaic School student artists, junior student Hannah Smith and sophomore Nih'jiel Jones, received awards in the 2015 Cuyahoga County Scholastic Art Competition. Nearly 3000 entries were submitted to the Cleveland Institute of Art for scoring by a panel of judges from the art community.

Hannah received one of the 108 Gold Key awards for her charcoal drawing and Nih’jel received an Honorable Mention for his coiled ceramic vessel.

“Hannah holds her work to an incredibly high standard and is a true problem solver,” said art teacher Laura Skehan. “She brings enthusiasm and a unique perspective to each visual challenge presented to her.”

"Nih'Jiel is a dedicated, hardworking and mature artist,” said art teacher Claire Raack. “His ceramic work is beyond his years and I can't wait to see where his talents will lead him."

The Cuyahoga County competition is part of the National Scholastic Art Competition. Gold Key award winners continue to the national competition held this spring in New York City. Winners in that contest are eligible for college scholarships.

All of the award winning pieces will exhibited at the Cleveland Institute of Art, Reinberger Galleries, 11141 East Blvd in Cleveland, January 14-30.
