Students Make Culinary Creations Using Math

March 22, 2017 -- Monticello Middle School students practiced real-world math and science skills through cooking at the Young Chefs Academy in Solon.

In February, the students in Mrs. Patti Smith’s class received hands-on instruction in making dough from scratch, applying Ohio’s Extended Standards to guide their functional lesson.

The students were able to choose toppings of their choice. Most chose cheese and pepperoni, with others cutting green peppers or adding onions. The best part was eating their delicious creations!

According to the Ohio Department of Education's website, the Extended Standards "help to ensure that students with significant cognitive disabilities are provided with multiple ways to learn and demonstrate knowledge. At the same time, the extended standards are designed to maintain the rigor and high expectations of Ohio’s Learning Standards."
