Black History Events at Heights High

Black History Month

Feb. 3, 2017 -- Heights High is celebrating and honoring Black History Month with activities for students and families.

The student events include discussion forums, guest speakers, museum visits, movie viewing and an assembly featuring the musical influences of African Americans.




Two events are for Heights High families:

Friday, February 24, 6 -8 p.m.: Soul Food Potluck and Family Game Night in the school cafeteria. The school will provide the main dish and beverages. Families are asked to bring a side dish or dessert. Entertainment will be provided by the Heights High Jazz Band and Step Team. Friday, February 17, 8 p.m.: Tiger Nation Night at the Ensemble Theater’s production of August Wilson’s Radio Golf, $5 per person. Ensemble Theater is located in the Coventry School Building, 2843 Washington Boulevard. 

August Wilson (1945 – 2005) was an American playwright whose work included a series of ten plays, The Pittsburgh Cycle, for which he received two Pulitzer Prizes. Each work in the series is set in a different decade, and depicts comic and tragic aspects of the African-American experience in the 20th century.

Fences (also a movie in theaters now) takes place in the 1950’s and Radio Golf takes place in the 1990’s and is about city politics and two men who want to redevelop an area of Pittsburgh. Ticket Info.

Tuesday, February 7: Lunch with Olympian Butch Reynolds; Dealing with and Overcoming Adversity, 9:50 a.m.-12:35.p.m. in the Media Center and the presentation will be part of the Athletic Department’s Let’s Talk Tuesdays, 3-4 p.m. in the cafeteria.

Wednesday, February 8: Maltz Museum Civil Rights Exhibit, Lessons of the Holocaust students and Basketball Team, 4-5:30 p.m., $3 per student .

Thursday, February 9: Sip n’Say Discussion Forum: Topic: Knowing Your Rights: The Legal Consequences of Juvenile Behavior, 3:15-4 p.m. in room B119.

Monday, February 13: Movie viewing of Hidden Figures, free admission for students with first semester grades of an A or B in their science class, 4-7 p.m. at Shaker Square Cinema.

Monday, February 13: Science Department: Regal Cinemas at Richmond Mall from 12-3pm. Tickets are $5 to be paid by student.

Wednesday, February 15: Maltz Museum Civil Rights Exhibit Visit, MSAN students, 4-5:30 p.m., $3 per student, bus will leave the school 4 p.m. If other students want to attend, see Mr. Williams in room T226.

Friday, February 17: All-School Blackout, students and staff invited to wear black in honor of Black History month.

Friday, February 17: Tiger Nation Night at the Ensemble Theater production of August Wilson’s Radio Golf, 8 p.m., $5 per person, 7:30 p.m. reception with discussion, location: 2843 Washington Blvd, Coventry School building.

Wednesday, February 22: Student Council’s Annual School Summit, Race Relations and Diversity Appreciation at Heights High, 2-3 p.m. in the cafeteria.

Wednesday, February 22: Maltz Museum Civil Rights Exhibit, Open Doors Academy, SHINE, and CTAG students, 4-5:30 p.m., $3 per student.

Thursday, February 23: Sip n’Say Discussion Forum, Food and Fitness: A Look into Black Health, 3:15-4 p.m. in room B119.

Friday, February 24: Soul Food Potluck and Family Game Night, 6-8 p.m. in the cafeteria, entertainment by Heights High Jazz Band and Step Team. The school will provide chicken and beverage. Families – please bring a side dish or dessert.

Monday, February 27: Black History Assembly: A Salute to the African-American Influences in Performing Arts.

Monday, February 27: Movie School Daze, 3:30-5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria, $3 per person, hosted by Student Council.

Tuesday, February 28: Cultural Garb Day – students and staff are invited to wear attire that reflects African-American culture.

The Black History Month activities were planned by a committee of staff members.
