Junior Charles Conwell is the 2015 Golden Gloves National Champion in the 165 pound weight class. On May 16, he won five bouts at the Las Vegas tournament.
The state of Ohio sent one boxer for each of the 10 weight classes and Charles is the only winner from Ohio.
Charles has been boxing since he was 10 years old and is currently training for the Olympic Trials in September. “My goal now is to make the 2016 Olympic team,” he said.
He credits his father with encouraging him to train and learn boxing and his uncle for helping with his coaching.
He enjoys winning and also the travel aspect of the sport. ‘It is interesting to see new cities and meet new people,” he said.
He may also attend college to box for a university team. His favorite class at Heights High is Algebra 2 Honors.
