Criminal Justice Students Receive Certifications

The Criminal Justice course, part of the Career and Technical Education program, hosted their year-end ceremony on May 21.

The event showcased the 11 seniors who passed the Ohio Peace Officer Training (OPOTA) test to receive the OPOTA certification.

Each senior student presented a different part of the program, including program overview, field trips, OPOTA content, class awards, senior project and awards. District administrators and Criminal Justice teachers and volunteers presented the awards to the students.

Parent Adviser Saadgiga Raheen spoke about each students as they accepted their awards. She talked about each student’s growth and at achievement.

Two students received the Jason West Scholarship, a memorial for a Cleveland Heights officer killed in the line of duty.

The event was attended by eight alumni who spoke to the group about their experiences after graduating from the program.

The Criminal Justice OPOTA certified students are: Alia Box, De’Carlos Carroll, Chauntel Foster, Kelly Howard, Kenya Jackson, Bhailey Jones, Anna Majercak, Alexus Mincy, Darnesha Pollard, Maisha Raheem and Carols Winston.

Besides earning the OPOTA certification, the students are also certified in CPR, first aid, automated external defibrillator and 12 sections of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. 

Johnnie Lemons is the Criminal Justice Teacher and Department Commander. Retired Agent T. Taylor is the Assistant Teacher.
