Byron Hopkins Named Heights High School Principal

Byron HopkinsMay 16, 2018 -- Byron Hopkins, currently the principal at Buchtel High School in Akron, has been selected as the new High School Principal for Heights High. The CH-UH Board of Education approved the hiring of Hopkins at Tuesday’s Board meeting.

CH-UH families, staff, students and the community are invited to meet Mr. Hopkins on Tuesday, May 22, from 6-7 p.m. in the Heights High library. Light refreshments will be served.

“I’m very excited to return to the CH-UH community,” said Hopkins, who lived for several years in Cleveland Heights. “This is an opportunity to join a community that I know supports students and supports education. I look forward to working with the administrative team, teachers, students, and the community to ensure that Heights High produces scholars who are college and career ready.”

“We are excited that Byron will be leading Heights High next year,” said CH-UH Superintendent Dr. Talisa Dixon. “Byron is a proven leader who has a diverse background as an educator and administrator in Northeast Ohio. His experience as a Career Tech teacher adds another layer to his resume as someone who fits our district mission--preparing students for college and careers. His familiarity with the CH-UH community will also be an asset as he makes connections with our students and their families. I look forward to seeing his leadership in action at Heights High.”

Hopkins has spent the past four years in Akron Public Schools, first as the principal at Kenmore High and then at his current post leading Buchtel High. Previously, he was the principal at East Tech Success Academy and then John Marshall High School, both part of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.

Prior to becoming a principal, Hopkins was a business teacher in the South Euclid Lyndhurst School District.

Hopkins received his bachelor of arts degree in business administration from Thiel College and his master of arts degree in vocational education from Kent State University. He earned his administrative license from Cleveland State University.

Hopkins will replace Interim High School Principal Dr. Brian Williams. Dr. Williams will return to his role as Coordinator of Alternative Programming at the Delisle Options Center in 2018-2019.

“I am thankful to Dr. Williams for his leadership at Heights High this year,” said Dr. Dixon. “Brian and I agreed that this would be a one-year temporary role at the high school. Brian will once again lead our Options program next year, a role he is very passionate about. I commend him for his work with our high school students and staff this past year, and I look forward to his continued success in our district.”
