Students, Educators Honored at June Board Meeting

June 7, 2018 -- Each month at its regular Board meeting, the CH-UH School District honors students and educators for their outstanding accomplishments. June was no different, as a crowd of more than 100 gathered in the Heights High cafeteria to honor several groups. Video of the meeting will be posted within 7-10 days.

Student Art Awards
Several young student artists who have won awards at the state level this year were recognized.

At this year’s Northeast Ohio Youth Art Month Exhibition, Dominic Douglas (pictured below) won first place in the portrait category, Annika Molloy won second place in the animal category, and Helena Duffy received second place in the landscape category.

At the Young People’s Art Exhibition, artwork by Genesis Tello (pictured below) was one of 130 pieces to be displayed in the Rhodes State Office Tower in Columbus.

Also in Columbus, Kendall Thompson’s art was one of 135 works chosen statewide to be displayed at the State Teachers Retirement System building, as part of the Youth Art Month Exhibition.

Heights Career Tech Cosmetology Program
The Cosmetology Program at Heights High, under the direction of instructor Donna Pollard, was recognized for its third straight year of successfully hand-crafting wigs for local cancer patients. Read more about the students’ great work in the community.

Heights High Robotics Team
The Heights High Robotics Team, under the direction of instructor Greg Nachman, was recognized for its recent success at battle bot competitions. The two Heights High teams took first and second place at the regional tournament to qualify for nationals. The teams finished fifth and 13th, respectively, at nationals where they competed against a number of college teams. Read more about the Robotics Team’s success.

Advisors Dr. Allen Wilkinson, a retired NASA scientist, and Jim Szpak of Nottingham Spirk, one of the primary sponsors for the Robotics Team, were on hand along with the students and Mr. Nachman.

District Retirees
A total of 15 staff members are retiring from the CH-UH School District this year. Assistant Superintendent of HR and Operations Paul Lombardo recognized the retirees with plaques and a reception before the Board meeting.

Tiger Team Members of the Month
Several of the May Tiger Team Members of the Month were on hand. Since CH-UH started the recognition program in October, a total of 337 staff members have been nominated. Read more about the most recent honorees.

New Administrators
The District’s four new administrators were introduced to the Board as each gave brief remarks at the meeting. The new administrators include Noble Elementary principal Patrick Carpenter, Oxford Elementary principal Teresa Taylor-Ware, Heights High principal Byron Hopkins, and Special Education Coordinator Paul Rusinko.
