Schools Named Top Energy Savers

May 27, 2017 -- Fairfax Elementary School has been named the top energy-saving school for the month of April, and Gearity takes the title home for March.

As an incentive tied to the District's Green Apple Project, the "Top Energy Saver" flag was presented to Fairfax on May 19. Gearity Professional Development School had the highest savings for March, but due to logistical issues, they will fly the flag at the beginning of the 2017-18 school year.

The Green Apple Project is focused on saving energy through behavior changes, in connection with Goal 5 (Operational Resources) of the Strategic Plan. It is estimated that we can reduce our energy costs by 20% by implementing a number of energy savings procedures throughout the district buildings. Examples:

- Turn off lights in unoccupied classrooms, offices, lounges, copy rooms and conference rooms.

- Reduce lighting in large common spaces when unoccupied – ex. lunchrooms and community rooms.

- Set computers and monitors to go into sleep mode after 15 minutes of inactivity.

- Unplug seldom-used devices, or plug them into power strips and only turn on when needed.
