Anti Gun Violence Activist Visits Heights

Speaker at Heights High

Sept. 14, 2017 -- Chicago social activist Demetrius Nash stopped at Heights High in early September on his 672 mile walk to Washington DC.

His mission is to tell citizens and students about the seriousness of gun violence and the effects on poor and minority neighborhoods all over the country.

He spoke to Karen Battle’s class about his life and what he has learned after serving eight years in prison for drug trafficking.

He stressed the importance of valuing people over things, thinking ‘outside the block’ and reminded the students that their ancestors were gifted leaders, mathematicians and architects. He encouraged students to make plans for themselves and to ask others for help when needed, to get an education and to build a network of positive people who can encourage a healthy, successful life.

The inspiration for the walk and much of Mr. Nash’s work came from Nelson Mandela's book, A Long Walk To Freedom. The book helped fuel his desire to make a change in the community.

His walk began on August 4 in Chicago and plans to meet with the Black Caucus and Illinois congress members after he arrives in DC.

Mr. nash also started a nonprofit organization, Replace Guns with Hammers to encourage young men to enter the trades, rehabbing building in their own communities.

Heights High staff member Jameel Davis, an MC and para-professional at the school, helped make the connection for Mr. Nash’s presentation.
