Heights Alum Bill Beard Inducted Into Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame

Sept. 20, 2017 -- Heights High School alumnus Bill Beard (‘80) was inducted into the Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame last week.

Beard was one of seven people inducted, including former Cleveland Indians outfielder-turned-broadcaster Rick Manning, former Cavaliers owner Gordon Gund, high school wrestling forecaster Brian Brakeman, former Plain Dealer writer and Channel 8 broadcaster Dan Coughlin, former St. Ignatius and NFL quarterback Oliver Luck, and long-time amateur golf champion Tom Slater.

Beard played ice hockey and baseball for the Tigers before going on to play both sports at Princeton University.

Beard coached University School to two state championships and two runner-up finishes while going 347-181-48 in 16 seasons at the helm. Beard was an assistant hockey coach at Heights High before joining US, helping the Tigers to a state championship, a state runner-up, and two Baron Cup titles.
