CH-UH Elementary Schools Move Out of Federal “Focus” Designation

CH-UH City School District LogoDec. 10, 2018 -- Four elementary schools in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District moved out of the U.S. Department of Education’s “Focus School” designation this year.

Boulevard Elementary, Fairfax Elementary, Noble Elementary, and Oxford Elementary each moved from “Focus” to “Independent” status due to their respective state report card scores on the Gap Closing component. CH-UH now has six of its seven elementary schools in “Independent” status, including Canterbury Elementary and Roxboro Elementary.

“We are proud of the work being done in our school buildings, and these new ‘Independent’ designations are a result of the efforts made by our principals, teachers, and staff,” said CH-UH Superintendent Dr. Talisa Dixon. “We are committed to teaching our students to master our own curriculum and providing the needed supports for every student to succeed. This is certainly a step in the right direction and something our school community should be proud of.”

Schools with large achievement gaps among different demographic subgroups are identified as “Focus” schools by the U.S. Department of Education. Ohio’s Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) state plan calls for state supports to schools in this federal status.

Schools are identified every three years, with the next identification update being after the 2020-2021 school year.
