District Stretching Most Recent Operating Levy to 2020

CH-UH City School District logoOct. 17, 2018 -- The CH-UH City School District will be able to stretch its most recent operating levy an extra year to 2020, Treasurer Scott Gainer announced at the Board of Education work session on Tuesday.

The most recent operating levy, Issue 109 which was passed in November 2016, was meant to last three years before the District would have to go back on the ballot to avoid negative cash reserves. However, due to current and projected future budget cuts, the District will not have to ask taxpayers to pass another levy until 2020.

As shown in the most recent Five-Year Forecast, the District will cut $750,000 from the 2019-2020 budget and an additional $750,000 each year through 2023 to stretch its operating funds. The District is committed to minimizing cuts to classroom instruction as part of these target savings.

Despite this announcement, the Board of Education has not formally put any levy on the ballot. Any future levy would necessitate further discussion from the Board of Education and District administration.

Additionally, the District will soon be accepting applications for its Lay Finance Committee (LFC). The LFC will act as the designated audit committee for the District, receiving the annual financial audit report and findings from the Auditor of State. The LFC will work as a liaison to the community, assisting in identifying finance and budget information to be communicated to our residents.

Treasurer Scott Gainer presented to the Board during the work session on Tuesday, covering financial topics such as public school funding and the District’s annual budget. Video of the meeting will be available next week.
