Monticello Middle School Renovations Update

Oct. 15, 2018 -- The Bond Accountability Commission (BAC) took a site visit to Monticello Middle School earlier this month to see first-hand the progress made on the renovations to the building.

Specifically, the BAC reviewed work on two aspects of the renovation. First, the group inspected the condition of the flooring on the third level of the building. During demolition, the construction crew discovered that the flooring was in worse shape than originally expected.

Above the auditorium stage, significant cracks and holes were discovered in the flooring. Additional work is needed to repair the flooring and its structural support. This work will not delay the project, and the expected cost--approximately $100,000--is already built into the allowances included in the original contract with Turner Construction.

Second, the group visited a classroom that is mocked up to show the location of the interactive display, tack boards, utility outlets, and furniture.

The BAC will visit Roxboro Middle School in November.

Both middle schools remain on schedule to be reopened in the summer of 2019, prior to the opening of school in August.

The Bond Accountability Commission is overseeing the project in conjunction with District staff and the Board of Education. The BAC includes community members who have experience in the areas of finance, construction, engineering, architecture or project management.

Monticello and Roxboro Renovation Overview
The focus of the renovations is on improving the instructional space in each building. Once complete, every classroom in Monticello and Roxboro will have new:

  • heating and air conditioning,
  • paint,
  • flooring,
  • ceilings,
  • lighting,
  • fire alarms,
  • sound reinforcement system,
  • interactive touch-screen display monitor, and
  • whiteboard.

New heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems will be installed throughout both buildings, including the auditoriums, along with new lighting. Administrative areas will receive facelifts with new carpet, paint and reception desks. The gymnasiums will be repainted, and lockers will be refurbished and painted.

At Monticello, the renovations include modifications to the rear main entry and the lower level locker rooms. At Roxboro, the renovations include improvements to the main entry and the installation of restrooms in the lower level.
