Sept. 17, 2018 -- Students in the new Computer Integrated Manufacturing engineering course designed, built and programmed Automated Guided Vehicles, AGV. The small self guided vehicles are similar to robotics used in warehouses and other settings to deliver materials.

The students in the second period class worked in teams to build three units that could follow a black line route on the floor, have a manuel start button, will stop for six seconds at intersections, are capable of carrying cargo and included an emergency stop switch.

After discussing different approaches, each team built and tested their first model. That experience lead to several design and programming changes and more test drives.

Casandra Budin teaches the class. “One of the things that impresses me about the students is that they don’t give up and they share ideas with each other, making all the designs better,” she said.

Senior Sam Kramer said, “We all used the same materials, but each one looks different,” he said. “We could all be creative to solve the problem.”

Ryan Andrews enjoys troubleshooting and addressing design and programming problems.

All of the seniors in the class are planning to study engineering in college. Below are two of the schools each student is interested in attending:

Ryan Andrews: University of Toledo and Akron University
Jacqueline Gold: Colorado School of Mines and case Western Reserve University
Sam Kramer: The Ohio State University and University of Cincinnati
Deckard Manne: University of Cincinnati and The University of Pittsburgh
Elijah Saunt: University of Colorado at Denver and The University of Utah
Senior Jack Dyer and juniors Gabe Gosselin and Malique Mauldin is also enrolled in the class.

The new Computer Integrated Manufacturing course is the fourth course in the engineering series and is part of the Career and Technical Education program. The course is the most advanced and follows the three existing courses: Introduction to Engineering Design, Digital Electronics and Principles of Engineering.

“We are so happy to add this class to our engineering coursework,” said Mrs. Budin. “These courses are excellent background for students who want to study engineering in college or who want to develop the skills for another interest.”

Greg Nachman is the other engineering teacher and also coaches the Robotics team.
