Feb. 12, 2019 -- Fairfax 5th grader Milan Teague was recently featured on NewsDepth, WVIZ’s current events television program aimed at students. Nominated by teacher Kristi Glasier, Milan was recognized with the program’s A+ Award for her “entrepreneurial spirit and athletic ambition.” As a competitive track runner, Milan trains for and races in meets all over the country, including Texas, Michigan, and Iowa.

All the travel expenses that come with such a competitive schedule can add up. So Milan and her father started Milan’s Bead Company, making and selling bracelets and necklaces, to fund her participation in the sport she loves. “I always liked making jewelry,” she said. “I especially like when my mom or dad help me when I get stuck and need ideas.” 

Her father is one of her coaches at Feet on Fire, a youth sports organization for children in Greater Cleveland. Milan runs the 200 and 400 meter dash, and sometimes the 100 meter and relay. She felt proud “and a little bit embarrassed” when her class watched the news program. She’ll have to get used to all the attention if she achieves her dream of running in the Olympics. “I just want to win,” she said.
