Superintendent’s Message: A Fresh Outlook on a New Year
Dr. Talisa Dixon

Jan. 5, 2017 -- The beginning of a new year is a natural time to start something new. Many of us begin with fresh goals, perspectives, and visions of our future. Think about the resolutions you’ve made over the years to exercise more, eat healthy meals, save money, or even kick a bad habit.

This year, I’ve decided to focus on two things: reading more books, and health & wellness. And I have challenged the district staff to join me!

First, I’m challenging everyone to read at least one book each month—something that will spark conversations and inspire us to do things we ordinarily would not do.

This month, I’m reading Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly. This book highlights the untold story of Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Jackson – three brilliant African American women working at NASA, who served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit. These visionaries crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big. The movie adaptation of Hidden Figures premieres this Friday, January 6.

The second challenge is health and wellness. I know we’ve heard time and time again that “we are what we eat.” Yes, it’s so hard for me to let go of my favorite candies—Smarties and Laffy Taffy—and my regular splurges on Starbucks. However, the sugar is not going to help me, so I’ve started using Stevia and eating peppermint for an energy boost. I think small, everyday changes like these are manageable ways for us to get healthier.

So as we continue to focus on our Strategic Plan, I have asked each of our valued professionals to pay specific attention to Goal 4: Creating a Culture of Excellence. Every member of this organization is important, and their mental and physical health are both essential to our mission. Let’s get together to strengthen our minds and renew our focus on health and wellness!
