Jan. 11, 2017 -- The Model United Nations (UN) Club participated in the December Model United Nations Conference at Lorain Community College. Model UN is a simulation that introduces students to the world of diplomacy, negotiation, and decision making.
Students choose a country to represent as a delegate, research their countries position on a given topic and respond to the proposal. Students find allying counties and negotiate proposed solutions to the topic or problem.
Parliamentary Procedure is used throughout the simulation and includes formal and informal debates, moderated caucuses and voting on a resolution.
Seniors Anya Chew and Benjamin Schuster represented China and received the Superior Delegation Award in the Security Council.
Mary Jane Reinhardt and Sylvia Snow-Rackley received the Honorable Mention Award representing China in the Human Rights Council. Other members of the Model UN Club who participated in the conference were Avery Dyer, Georgie Jolivette and David Matia.
“The students were so professional and skilled at following Parliamentary Procedure,” said Model UN Advisor Maria Francis. “I was especially proud of how they negotiated alliances with other countries to form resolutions.”
The club will attend the Cleveland International Model UN Conference February 16-18 at St. Edwards High School.
