Fifth Graders Compete in Local Math Tournament
A pencil and a math problem on paperMarch 13, 2017 -- Two teams of fifth graders from Gearity Professional Development School and Noble Elementary competed in a math tournament alongside local schools on February 18.

The Fifth and Sixth Grade Problem Solving Tournament, sponsored by the Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics, was held at John Carroll University. All morning long, the students had to work collaboratively in their teams to solve the math problems presented to them.

According to their teacher, Mrs. Tammy Heldman, the math problems covered a variety of fifth grade math standards, as well as the standards for mathematical practices.

"The students practiced during their lunch hour for a few weeks before the contest," said Heldman. "I'm so proud of how they worked together at the tournament."

Additionally, in the spirit of March Madness, CH-UH elementary and middle schools are having a fun and friendly "March Math Madness" competition using the online tool Study Island. Read more about how your child can participate.
