Rox El Run Set for May 20
Students race in 2015 Rox El Run

April 26, 2017 -- The RoxEl Run, a fun-filled, community, and family event benefiting Roxboro Elementary School, is set for Saturday, May 20 at 9 a.m. The race begins at the Roxboro Middle School track and loops through the Cleveland Heights neighborhoods surrounding the school.

More than 350 participants are expected at this year’s event, according to event organizers. The race includes a 4-mile and 2-mile run, or a 2-mile walk, which begins shortly after the run start time and follows the same route. The Kid’s Fun Run, for elementary-age children, begins at 10 a.m. and takes place inside the middle school track.

Entry options are as follows:

• Adult Entry (15 years or older) for 4- or 2-mile run OR 2-mile walk

• Child Entry (14 years or younger) for 4- or 2-mile run OR 2-mile walk

• Kid’s Fun RunOpen Track Event (young children, elementary age or younger) for those that cannot do 2 miles on the street; participants will start at 10 a.m. and can do as many laps as they want. All Open Track participants will receive a prize; no t-shirts are provided for this event.

The event, organized by Roxboro Elementary School PTA members and volunteers, uses the tagline “Run Like it’s Recess,” encouraging children to incorporate healthy habits and make physical fitness part of a healthy lifestyle.

“This event brings kids, parents, and teachers together, outside of the classroom,” said Roxanne Bain, RoxEl Run co-chair and member of the PTA. “Kids run alongside their teachers while parents push their younger kids in strollers. This act of coming together creates inspiration for the children, especially when their role models are running right along with them. Plus, it’s just plain fun.”

Last year’s event drew 300 participants and raised $2,000.

Online registration costs are $20 + online fee for 4-mile/2-mile for Adult Entry; $10 + online fee for Child Entry; and $5 + online fee for Kid’s Fun Run – Open Track Event. Race day registration (at an increased fee) is available starting at 7:45 a.m. All paid participants in the 4-mile and 2-mile receive a “Run Like It’s Recess” t-shirt. Prizes are awarded for all age groups; all Kid’s Fun Run participants receive a prize. Complimentary childcare is available. Reservations can be made when registering for the race online. Save on ticketing fees when you register more than one person in your family.

Following the race, runners and families can enjoy refreshments, games, face painting and a DJ inside the track. Spectators are encouraged to bring their own blankets and chairs.

The event is made possible through the support of Cleveland Clinic Children’s Hospital; St. Paul’s Episcopal Church; Betsy Warner, State Farm Insurance; Bruegger’s Bagels; Luna Bakery and Cafe; James Costello; EastSide Landscaping, Family Connections and more.
