Roxboro Scoop - October 13, 2017

Goal: We will increase the Performance Index Rating from a 95.6 to a 98.5 which will bring our report card rating a B as measured by the 2017-2018 report card.

Conferences

Thank you parents for attending our conference night and learning about how your child is doing in school. We appreciate the time it takes out of your evening to come and hear how things are going. Our teachers put a lot of effort into planning for their conferences and we truly believe the partnership between home and school makes a huge difference!

Lunch Aides Working Together

I held a training with our lunch staff last week on motivating students to do their best. Our lunch staff gets to see our students during the time of day when the students can relax, let loose and blow off some steam. Our lunch aides are making a commitment to forming positive relationships with the students and helping create a fun and nurturing environment for the kids to participate in.

We have hired an additional lunch aide, Kyle Ringer, and are in the final stages of hiring one more aide. We have had Ms. Walker, a substitute, working since the beginning of the year because we had a vacancy. Ms. Early will be going on a family medical leave for 4-6 weeks and we will have Ms. Brown fill in for her as the supervisor. Ms. Walker will continue as a substitute and fill in for Ms. Brown. The lunch aides work very well together and will continue to structure their lunch and recess and work hard during Ms. Early’s absence.

IB Survey

We would like to get feedback from you on how we are doing with IB. Please take a few minutes to fill out this survey. We would like to have this completed prior to November 10. Thanks for your help!

Lockdown Drill

Each year we are required to participate in 2 lockdown drills. We will have our first drill on October 20 at 9:30. This will be a level 3 lockdown drill. I will get on the PA and let staff and students know that we are having a level 3 drill and emphasize that it is only a drill. This means that the classes will close their doors, turn off the lights and go out of sight in the classrooms. They will also know that in a real event they would follow the procedures to barricade the door by moving classroom items in front of the door. All schools follow the ALICE procedures of Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate. One of the difficult things to practice is to counter, because it is a last resort. We will have conversations with our students about this during the drill but not practice. Some of the recommended counter activities include throwing books or materials at someone that enters the room, making as much noise as you can and running around the room to create chaos. In a real event our teachers will take the lead in assisting our students in knowing what they should do.

Halloween

We will have our annual Halloween parade at 2:00 on October 31. We will continue the tradition of walking around the W. St. James block, weather permitting. Please remember to not have any weapons, swords, scary masks or any facial paint that could scare the students. We want this to be a positive experience for everyone! The classroom parties will start immediately following the parade. If the weather isn’t conducive to having the parade outside, we will parade around the school. I will send an email confirming the parade route that morning.

A Night at the Un-Shop

If you would like to learn more about the Un-Shop at Rox El, please join us this Thursday night from 6:00-8:00. We are opening up the shop for people to learn about the shop and talk about ways they can assist us in running this very worthwhile shop for our students.
