Film Explores the Costs of Privatizing Public Ed
Oct. 4, 2017 -- The public is invited to a free screening of, “Backpack Full of Cash” on Tuesday, October 10, 7:00 p.m. at Heights High School, 13265 Cedar Road.
The documentary is narrated by Matt Damon and explores how school reform that uses public funds to pay for charter schools and vouchers to private schools undermines public education.
The film features principals, teachers, activists, parents and students who are fighting for their public schools.
The screening is sponsored by the Heights Coalition for Public Education, Reaching Heights, Cleveland Heights Teachers Union, Northeast Ohio Friends of Public Education, Progress NEO, and the Northeast Ohio Branch, American Association of University Women.
This year the Cleveland Heights – University Heights school district will transfer more than $2.8 million to charter schools and $4.7 million to private and parochial schools for students using publicly funded vouchers.
Privatization is widespread in Ohio. According to the Columbus Dispatch in 2016 more than $1billion in public funds went to Ohio charter schools and $117million paid for vouchers to private and mostly parochial schools.
