Canterbury Monthly Updates - December 2017
December 2017

IB News

Happy Holidays! Hopefully you have seen the district’s IB/STEM update that was published last month. You read about many of the engaging educational activities in which our students have participated. In addition to this piece, check out an article highlighting our first grader’s Flat Stanley experience that was part of their Where We Are in Place and Time IB unit.  Families from all three classrooms participated by having a cardboard cut-out called Flat Stanley travel to friends and families around the world.  Our children learned about life in new places and how where you live can direct your fun.

Our fifth graders have been busy learning about light and sound in their How the World Works IB unit and will be moving on to force, motion, and government focusing on the central idea of “Laws are present in many forms and are continually changing in response to variables.” A field trip to the Rock Hall and connections during Music and PE classes make the learning connect to real-life. Next month, we will highlight grades 2, 3, and 4. Finally, if you weren’t able to attend the PTA meeting last month, the IB PYP slideshow is here.  Please email me with any questions, comments, or concerns, and if you see your child “playing” school at home or doing things, making connections, taking ACTION, send me a picture for the bulletin board!

Be sure to follow Canterbury on Twitter at @CHUHCanterbury and Melissa Garcar @melissagarcar12 for pictures of our students during the school day.

Canterbury Ambassadors!

In November, the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade members of the Canterbury Ambassador Council had the opportunity to Skype with students from our sister school, Dominicas Vista Bella, in the Canary Islands. The students met to prepare and practice speeches in Spanish about their Thanksgiving traditions, and hear all about how children in the Canary Islands celebrate Christmas and New Year’s. The students will Skype again in February.

Literacy Night! January 18th

This year’s “Chill Out and Read” has changed to “Wonder-ful Winter Reading”.  We are continuing to request that our “Tigers” maintain their reading endurance during the Winter Break.  Therefore, they will receive an activity sheet that has a variety of activities to choose from.  Each activity aligns with the book that the students received from the school.  Please remember to return the completed packet back to your child’s homeroom teacher on Monday, January 8, 2018.

Our annual Literacy and IB Night will be held on Thursday, January 18, 2018.  This year we are focusing on the learner profile of being an Inquirer.   Throughout the evening we will wonder about a variety of concepts such as who we are, how we can make a difference, and what will happen, just to name a few.  The evening will begin with dinner at 6:00 p.m., and activities from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.
