Boulevard 101:
Brought to you by the PTA parents
This information is intended to supplement the Student Handbook and contains questions/situations that previous Boulevard parents had encountered during their first year. For additional information on school policies, be sure to read your Student Handbook that you will receive at the beginning of the school year.
Drop Off/Pick Up
1st Bell: 8:45 a.m. (students enter the building at this time)
2nd Bell: 8:50 a.m. (students are tardy after this bell rings)
Dismissal: 3:05 p.m.
Tuesday dismissal: 2:05 p.m.
Kindergarteners and 1st and 2nd graders are dropped off and picked up at the main entry. Other grades are assigned to various entrances of the building. Traffic around the school is very congested at these times. Give yourself plenty of time to find a parking spot and walk to the school. Please do NOT drop your child off in traffic along Euclid Heights Boulevard or Lee Road. Some parents (especially of 3rd and 4th graders) find it easier to drop their children off at the stop sign from Beechwood Avenue turning onto Euclid Heights Boulevard (it’s closer to the 3rd/4th grade entrance) than trying to navigate the parking lot.
Breakfast
In addition to Before-Care, which starts at 7:00 a.m., you may drop your child/children off at school at 8:15 a.m. for breakfast. Breakfast may be purchased for a small fee; see your cafeteria envelope/packet for information on pre-paying. No advance sign-up is necessary for breakfast. If your child qualifies for free or reduced lunch, they also qualify for free breakfast.
Lunch
Kindergarteners and first graders have their lunch break in the cafeteria/multi-purpose room at 11:20 a.m. This includes lunch (11:20-11:50 a.m.), followed by recess (11:50-12:20 p.m.). The kindergarten aide will be in the lunch room with the kindergarteners. Second graders have recess first, from 11:20-11:50 a.m., followed by lunch at 11:50-12:20 p.m. Third and fourth graders have lunch from 12:25-12:55 p.m., followed by recess from 12:55-1:20 p.m. Fifth graders have recess from 12:25-12:55 p.m. and lunch from 12:55-1:20 p.m. There are snacks available for students to purchase if they bring money and finish their lunch.
Special Activities
Children will have Music, Art, and Physical Education once a week. Remember to send gym shoes on your assigned gym day—although many students choose to leave an extra pair of gym shoes at school. Children visit the Media Center/Library every other week. It’s helpful to mark it on the calendar at home so you know when to send their library books back.
Field Trips
Field trips require permission slips. If you chaperone, non-Boulevard students, such as younger siblings, cannot be transported on the bus and you will need to make alternative arrangements for transportation.
Help in Classrooms
Most teachers are happy to accommodate parent volunteers in the classroom. Talk to your child’s teacher if you can help in the classroom occasionally or on a regular basis. This is a great way to see what your child is learning and to become acquainted with their friends.
Awards and Assemblies
Parents are encouraged to attend Recognition Assemblies. Assemblies occur on Friday mornings at 9:30 a.m. no more than once a month. If your child is being recognized, you will receive a letter home earlier in the week. Refer to the school newsletter, Boulevard Broadcaster, for dates and times.
Before- and After-Care
There is an on-site before- and after-care provider here at Boulevard. It is run by the School District (information available at the Board of Education, 371-7171). Off-site providers include the Cleveland Heights Community Center (691-7373) and a variety of other childcare providers in Cleveland Heights. The School District provides bus transportation to off-site providers.
Receiving Information
Check your child’s backpack nightly. Important school information from teachers, administrators, PTA (Parent Teacher Association), the school calendar, the cafeteria calendar, and fundraising packets comes home via the “backpack express.” The monthly school newsletter, the Boulevard Broadcaster, is published by the PTA and contains an updated calendar of events, award assemblies, and volunteer opportunities.
Be sure the school has your most recent phone numbers (notify of any home, work, or cell number changes) to assure that you are included on the automated call list to be informed of important School District news, including snow days. |
