About Canterbury
Canterbury is one of seven elementary schools in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District which is an inner-ring district in Cleveland. We have a diverse population of approx. 400 students annually. We are comprised of a dedicated staff who fully understands what it means to be a team of professionals who want to do the best we can for the students that we serve.
Each year we devise an academic plan and develop goals. They are currently as follows:
- Incorporate higher levels of thinking aligned to the standards/indicators as evidenced by tasks, teacher questioning, and assessments.
- Engage students in writing across the content areas in their weekly instruction.
The entire staff understands that they must be completely invested in the goals of the school. We need to closely examine our core instruction so that interventions can be avoided because of a strong curriculum and instructional practices. We utilize the venue of Professional Learning Communities to collaborate and the communities have accepted shared responsibility for achievement of all students. Data is constantly reviewed and formative assessment practices are utilized. Reflection on our instructional practices is accomplished by analyzing student work. Each team collaboratively shares effective instructional practices when the desired student outcomes are not achieved.
The data shows that Canterbury must continue its focus on our two goals to develop critical thinkers who are challenged and engaged in rigorous lessons that incorporate writing into all the content areas. Teachers need to gain a better understanding of the components of rigor in their lessons, create lessons that demand critical thinking and problem solving, become skillful in higher-level questioning techniques, and build common assessments that link to those rigorous lessons.
School-wide Title I
Each of our seven elementary and three middle schools receive Title I support because they have a poverty rate above 40%. The support can be delivered in one of two ways - either, a targeted assistance model or a school-wide model. The targeted assistance model, which we have used for many years, allowed for a certain group of students to qualify for and receive support service for the entire school year. Last year, each school collaboratively planned and completed the application process that allowed our district to move from a targeted assistance model to a school-wide model. Under the school-wide model, we are able to utilize our support teachers and resources differently. Schools qualify for Title I funds based on financial need; whereas, students are selected for service based on academic need. With the school-wide model, there is greater flexibility in how service is provided to students. Under the school-wide model, every student is considered a Title I student. However, this does not mean that every student will receive additional support intervention service from a Title I teacher. Title I teachers will be assisting classroom teachers as they continue to provide students with experiences in small group, whole group and independent work.
