Third grade Canterbury students are partnering with graphic arts students at Ball State University in Indiana to create beautiful bookmarks. We had a hands – on workshop with Professor Hans Kellogg who talked to the students about how artists are responsible for the images we encounter in our daily lives and explained to them how the printing process recreates the artist’s original work. In art class students studied the artist/naturalist John James Audubon and learned how he used careful observation to record details of North American bird species. Students were challenged to use their observational skills to create a pleasing bird design that would fit into a long, narrow format. Students from BSU must now learn how to master the use of digital imaging to produce the printed bookmarks. Our designs will also be used to create a composite poster! In all, 30 designs were chosen to represent our school. Students are waiting with anticipation since the printed product will be distributed to local libraries and at the National Book Festival in Washington, D.C.
