Title I Information

September, 2011

English Lanugage Arts in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights elementary schools will be different during the 2011-2012 school year.  The changes are intended to ensure that every child reads at or above grade level by the end of the 3rd grade.  To achieve this goal, each and every child will learn skills and actions based on his or her unique strengths and weaknesses.  Two factors will contribute to the ability to provide the necessary, specialized instruction.

First, instructional time for reading has been increased to 135 minutes daily at grades 1st through 3rd.  This block of time will include literacy instruction in English Lanugage Arts and Social Studies. This will allow children to have more time to be taught and demonstrate their understanding of their learning.

Second, students will be performance grouped for English Language Arts.  This will provide children who have similar reading behaviors with a teacher who is able to target specific skills and actions to help those children grow to the next level in reading, writing and spelling.  The student teacher ratio will be adjusted so that students who have the most need for specialized instruction have a lower student teacher ratio.   All children will have a rigorous curriculum that addresses grade level standards.  Additionally, all students in grades Kindergarten through 3rd will experience specific lessons designed to develop their problem-solving strategies and critical thinking skills.

We are looking forward to seeing more children succeed and reach for the next level of achievement.  We want each and every child to become a better reader and writer.

Family involvement is critical to our program’s success, and is invited throughout the year. We encourage your attendance during building events, workshops and conferences.
