About Heights High

Four Small Schools Give Students a Place to Belong and Learn

A common curriculum is taught in all the small schools; however, each small school has a theme that focuses the way the information is taught.

The goal of the small schools structure is to improve student achievement—to increase the number of students who graduate, attend college, score well on standardized tests, take advanced classes, participate in leadership programs, and view school as an engaging place to learn.

Each school is housed in a different wing of the building with an office for the principal, administrative assistant, and counselor. Student lockers and many courses are also based in this area.

The Advanced Placement program offers 17 AP courses.

There are over 70 extracurricular clubs and activities including athletics, performing arts, and community service. Examples of these activities include mock trial, math club, Gospel Choir, AFS Cultural Exchange, student council, and synchronized swimming.

All students receive a laptop computer at the beginning of the school year and the school is Wi-Fi accessible. A beautifully restored auditorium complete with Tiffany chandeliers is the center of the instrumental, vocal, and theater program.

The school offers many programs aimed at encouraging and supporting students to focus on school success and attend college.

The Freshman Experience

This half-day program for all freshmen will be housed in a separate area of the school. Students take their English, science, and social studies courses in this area, and their math courses will be housed in their small school.

The program includes support for students that will help them value school, develop effective study habits, leadership skills, and learn to ask for help when they need it.

This additional social and emotional support is designed to ease the transition from middle school to high school.

The One to One Laptop Program

All students receive a Dell Netbook computer. Click here to see the information packet for parents. Click here to see the Laptop Agreement Form. This form must be completed and returned to the school for students to receive a computer.

History

Between 1901 and 1926, Cleveland Heights High School was located on the site of Boulevard Elementary School on Lee Road. In 1907, five students were in the first graduating class of Cleveland Heights High School.

The current building at the corner of Cedar and Lee Roads was built in 1927 during a period of rapid growth in Cleveland’s suburbs. In 1946, the football stadium was built after Cleveland Heights resident Harry Hosford donated $100,000 toward the facility.

In 1950, the first major building addition was completed, and in 1961 the science wing, administrative offices, a pool, and a larger gymnasium on Cedar Road were added. To see a more detailed history, click here.
