The Instrumental Music program is part of the Mosaic School and open
to students from all small schools. Some courses are offered
as part of the curriculum (for credit) and others are extra curricular.
The department hosts a full concerts schedule, with performances in
the Heights High Auditorium. Many groups also perform at numerous community venues.
Parent Support Organization
The Band and Orchestra Parents Organization provides support for the photos by Daniel Boyle, db designs
students and the program.
Instrumental Music Courses:
Concert Orchestra: This entry level orchestra is open to all musicians. The instruction focuses on tone quality, rhythmic accuracy, articulation and sight reading. All members participate in the Marching Band.
Symphony: This is the advanced orchestra and requires an audition. Instruction focuses on intonation, balance, sight reading and musicality.
Concert Band: The entry level band is open to all musicians. Instruction emphasizes developing basic skills and to works well as a group. All members participate in the Marching Band.
Symphonic Band: A more advanced band, auditions required. All members participate in the Marching Band.
Symphonic Winds: The most advanced band, auditions required. Instruction
focuses on articulation, rhythmic accuracy and ensemble experience.
Jazz Band and Jazz Combo: For the advanced jazz musician, audition required.
Applied Guitar: This course focuses on basic and advanced guitar skills.
African American Music: This course teaches the about African American Music. Activities include drumming, music literacy, rhythmic reading, guest performances and research.
AP Music Theory: For students with a strong music background who
want to learn more about theory.
Extra Curricular
Marching Band: This band performs at football games and in local parades.
Chamber Ensembles: All students in the IMD are encouraged to join an ensemble.
Senior Solos
All seniors are invited to audition for an opportunity to perform as a soloist with the band or orchestra at one of the three school concerts.
Annual Tour
The Symphonic Winds, Symphony, and Jazz Band travel for an annual spring tour where the groups perform at different venues and participate in workshops and tours at a college or university.
