SES & Public School Choice Information

SES UPDATE:

Dear CHUH families:

On May 29, 2012, Ohio’s request to the U.S. Department of Education for an ESEA Flexibility Waiver was approved.  In the past, the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law required local school districts to provide Supplemental Education Services (SES tutoring) to qualifying families free of charge.  During the 2011-2012 school year, in compliance with NCLB parameters, income-eligible students at four of our seven elementary schools had the option of receiving up to $1291.00 of free tutoring services.  The number of students taking advantage of these tutoring services could not exceed 252.

 

Under the May 29 waiver, this one-size-fits-all mandate is eliminated, allowing our district the freedom and opportunity to use our resources in ways that are tailor-made to meet the needs of our CH-UH students.  CH-UH data has revealed that one-third of students do not read at grade level.  We must aggressively address this serious literacy issue. 

 

Therefore, for the 2012-2013 school year, we will no longer be offering Supplemental Educational Services tutoring to qualifying students.  Instead, we are committed to the strongest support of our Performance Groupings in English Language Arts for students in grades 1 through 4 at all seven of our elementary schools. 

 

Performance Grouping is based on the reading level of each student in a grade.  During English Language Arts instruction, the resources freed up by the ELEA waiver will now allow us to place those students who are not yet reading at grade level in small groups of no more than 10 students.  To support these at-risk students, additional teachers will be assigned to a grade level during the English Language Arts block.  Students will be placed in a performance group based on assessment data collected in the spring of 2012 as well as on feedback from the English Language Arts teachers’ assessment of a student’s daily performance.  All grade level teachers will collaborate in reviewing student performance and changing group assignments as students’ needs change.
