About Wiley Middle School

Mission Statement

The vision of Wiley Middle School is that students will happily and actively be engaged in learning that will be real world, relevant, active, and research based, helping all students to meet or exceed their individual learning potential. Students will leave Wiley equipped to discover and explore their interests, aptitudes, and abilities.

Staff will work together to create an atmosphere of respect, quality learning, inclusiveness for the students’ learning and futures. Staff will use a variety of strategies and outside resources to ensure that student learning is relevant, challenging, and engaging. Assessments will be ongoing and related to instruction, and standards set to ensure no student will “fall through the cracks.” Excellence will be rewarded through celebrations that represent quality achievements on the parts of staff and students.

About the School

For over 50 years, Wiley has focused on building productive relationships between students and teachers that are essential to an engaging learning environment. As part of the school’s community outreach program each fall, Wiley students host a canned goods drive for the city food bank and spend time raking leaves for local residents, which has garnered commendation from city leaders.

At Wiley, mentoring and relationship-building are at the core of the “Prime Time” program. Prime Time is time in the morning and at the end of the day that helps students and staff connect on another level, fostering a positive academic partnership. In these mentorship groups, teachers oversee smaller groups of students and mentor them for their entire middle school career. This unique approach to student achievement has fostered continued academic growth for the school. Wiley has received top awards for this innovative advisor/advisee program from the Ohio Middle School Association.

Wiley has previously been recognized as one of Ohio’s “Schools to Watch” by the Ohio Department of Education, an honor only given to a limited number of schools in the state. The Ohio Schools to Watch program recognizes high-impact public middle schools in Ohio where there is a focus on all students leaving the middle grades prepared for success in high school and beyond. The designations were made after a rigorous application process that included Ohio Department of Education site visits to each school.

In 2004, the CH-UH District embarked on a unique partnership with John Carroll University to improve student achievement and enhance the content knowledge and instructional skills of Heights faculty. This partnership allows for additional tutoring and academic supports for Wiley students during class and after school. Students also work with John Carroll students in service projects that promote leadership and community service. This is an exciting way for Wiley students to establish a connection to a local university, and begin thinking about being prepared for their college experience early in their school careers. John Carroll student teachers actively participate at Wiley Middle School and provide support in literacy instruction, tutoring sessions, and assistance to teachers in extending classroom lessons. John Carroll University graduate and undergraduate coursework is also taught at Wiley.

Lunch

The cafeteria serves hot food, sandwiches, beverages, and desserts. Students may also bring lunch from home and just buy a beverage or dessert. The cost of lunch in the cafeteria depends on what students select to buy. All food must be eaten in the cafeteria. Students are not permitted to leave the building during lunch period.

Students may purchase lunch each day OR they may pay a lump sum to the cafeteria cashier which will be held in the student’s account. Purchases will be deducted from the account if funds are available. Each student will be assigned an account number that they will enter on a key pad at the cashier station to access their account.

Students are assigned to lunch tables and have 32 minutes to eat lunch. Students will spend either the first ten or last ten minutes with their lunch teacher.

Lockers

Two lockers will be assigned to each student: a hall locker located near the assigned lunch teacher’s classroom and a gym locker. The hall locker has a built-in combination lock. It is used for storing the student’s lunch, school materials, and outdoor clothes. Students are asked to leave their bookbags/backpacks in their lockers during the school day and only carry necessary items to class.
The gym locker also has a lock, so students do not have to purchase any locks. The gym locker is used for storing gym clothes, and books and regular clothes while the student is attending gym class.

Bookstore

The bookstore is open from 8:05-8:15 a.m. everyday. Certain required books and workbooks, basic supplies, gym clothes, and “spirit” wear are available for sale.

Bike Racks

Racks are available for those students riding their bikes to school. Students need to lock their bikes to the racks for security. For safety reasons, they are to avoid riding in the driveway and the parking lot.
