LPDC License Renewal

Option 1: Graduate Semester Hours — 6

• Requirements:
  1. Graduate Coursework must be taken at an accredited college or university.
• Verification of Completion:
  1. Official transcript indicating successful completion must be submitted to the Human Resources Office according to contractual timelines

Option 2: Continuing Education Units (18 CEUs) or 180 Contact Hours

• Requirements:
  1. CEU or other contact hours that will be used for renewal of a license must be taken from an accredited provider and verification certificate must be signed by presenter or provider. Note: ER&D professional development courses are approved and are the equivalent of 6 CEUs or 60 contact hours.

Option 3: Other approved Professional Development Activities (180 PDUs)

• Requirements:
  1. Other approved Professional Development Activities (PDUs) must be pre-approved by the LPDC to receive credit. See details in the LPDC Manual.
  2. Individuals seeking PDU credit must prepare and submit the required form(s) outlining the the planned activities for approval before beginning the plan.
  3. A maximum of 60 PDUs will be awarded for any single approved PDU activity.
  4. A log of relevant activities, a completed product, summary, and/or summary must be turned in to receive credit.

Option 4: Any Combination of options 1, 2, and 3 ( 1 semester hour =3 CEUs = 30 PDUs).
(6 semester hours = 18 CEUs = 180 PDUs)

Types of licenses and requirements for renewal under the licensure standards:

Provisional License (2 year)

Upon completion of an approved teacher education program, graduates are given a provisional license, which may be used for substitute teaching, and which requires three (3) semester hours to renew (6-9 semester hours, if lapsed). In order to transition from a two-year provisional license to a five-year professional license, the teacher must successfully complete the CH-UH entry-year program, pass Praxis III State assessment, and meet all other requirements as specified by the Ohio Department of Education. Renewal occurrence and regulations are restricted by the Ohio Department of Education.

Professional License (5 year):

In order to transition to or renew the initial five-year license, educators must successfully earn 6 semester hours, 18 CEU’s contact hours, or 180 PDU’s for other pre-approved professional development activities.

During the second professional license, educators must earn an M.A., an M.Ed., or 30 semester hours of graduate credit (required by State Law, Ch.3304-24 of the Administrative Code). Individuals already holding a Master’s degree must earn six (6) semester hours, 18 CEU’s or contact hours, or 180 PDU’s for other pre-approved activities.

The professional license is valid for five (5) years and may be subsequently renewed by individuals currently employed in a school district upon verification that the following requirements have been completed since the issuance of the license to be renewed:

• Six (6) semester hours of course work related to the goals of your IPDP, OR
• Eighteen (18) CEU’s or Contact Hours related to the goals of your IPDP, OR
• One hundred eighty (180) PDU’s awarded by the Local Professional Development Committee for other pre-approved professional development activities.

Regular duties of your current position, including supplemental contracts, are NOT eligible for PDU’s for other professional development activities.

Educators Who Are Licensed by Other Professional Boards

Under the 1998 Standards, physical therapists, school social workers, audiologists, speech-language pathologists, school nurses, and occupational therapists are required to maintain licensure through the other professional organization in that area. In order to renew Department of Education licenses, these educators must maintain their other board license. By doing so, they meet all Department of Education renewal requirements and therefore do not need to work through the LPDC. These individuals will renew by submitting a renewal application with proof of current professional license to the Department of Education.

The Ohio Standards for Professional Development define effective professional development as an ongoing, systemic process, linked to the daily practice of educators and based on data-driven needs. Educators are asked to examine their practice and determine priorities and goals. The IPDP should be based on the needs of the students, the educator, the school, and the district. and should included proposed professional development for the upcoming 5 years. Upon completion, the IPDP should be submitted to the LPDC as well as the documentation necessary to meet the requirements and timelines for renewal of licenses. This includes:

• the license renewal application (www.ode.state.oh.us — search for: Educator Licensure Applications)
• fingerprinting and FBI check
• verification of all Professional Development

Licensing/certification renewal forms:

1. The IPDP Kiosk online procedure can be found on the LPDC website.
2. The individual staff member will be responsible for maintaining and providing:
   • all current certificates/licenses
   • college transcripts
   • Individual Professional Development Plan (IPDP)
   • verification sheets, and
   • pre-approval forms and evaluation forms for CEU, contact hour, and PDU activities
3. Fingerprinting and a BCI and FBI background check (must be done in Human Resources)

Licensed/Certified staff members who have licenses/certificates that are scheduled for renewal must file an IPDP at the time of renewal. The IPDP should outline the professional development activities that are planned for the upcoming 5 years until the next expiration..

1. Submit one copy of your IPDP to the LPDC Committee via the employee Kiosk at the beginning of your license cycle and PRIOR to the start of any course work or activities.
2. The IPDP will be reviewed at the monthly LPDC meeting.
3. If you would like to revise your IPDP, submit one copy of the revision to the LPDC Committee
   for approval.
4. You must include verifications of completion of all Graduate Hours, CEU’s, Contact Hours,
   and PDU activities to the LPDC at the time of renewal, along with the pre-approval forms for
   each activity when applicable to HR.
5. All licensure renewal applications must be completed online.
