Message to Families From Superintendent Kirby - August 14, 2020

August 14, 2020

Dear CH-UH Families,

I’m writing to share District reopening updates, an important survey regarding school meals, online learning options and more.

Virtual Family Cafes

We kicked off our Virtual Family Cafe series on Wednesday, starting with our high school families and wrapping up the week with Canterbury, Gearity and Fairfax. I have learned so much from our conversations in just these first few days. I thank these families for their invaluable feedback and for the candid conversations. I have been bringing this information back to our leadership and planning committees so it can inform our plans moving forward.

If you haven’t done so already, I highly encourage you to register for an upcoming session. We’ll be doing these through August 28. The cafes are facilitated using the World Cafe style, which is centered around a welcoming set-up with smaller group conversations.

School meal survey

In order to best serve Tiger Nation during the remote learning period, the CH-UH Food Service Department (AVI Fresh) would like input on our families' preferences regarding school meals. This short survey will help AVI determine quantities, staffing, and potential extra locations for distribution. We ask that you please fill out a survey for each of your children. AVI plans to distribute breakfast & lunch combo bags during the remote learning period.

Chromebook distribution continues through August 20

The District is providing a Chromebook to every kindergarten through 12th grade student before the school year begins. Our goal is to make sure that every student has their own device to be successful with online learning in the new school year.

The distribution schedule can be found hereRegardless of which school your child attends, you can attend any scheduled distribution to receive a computer. We ask that you please wear a mask for your safety and the safety of our staff.

Remote learning

The District plans to remain in remote status for at least the first nine weeks of school. Around the five-week mark, we will reexamine Cuyahoga County’s alert status, along with our District’s situation at that time, in order to determine the learning plan for the following quarter.

Our Curriculum & Instruction Department has been reaching out this week to families who chose the Ohio Online program for their students’ remote learning to confirm this information and answer questions. Final sample schedules for mySchool Online will be presented at the Board of Education meeting on Tuesday, August 18 at 7:30 p.m. You can watch the meeting live on our YouTube page.

Our teaching staff returns next week for professional development. I look forward to connecting with them as they gear up to learn best practices in remote learning, collaboration, family engagement, and much more. Although this is a truly atypical situation, I can’t wait to see the innovative professional learning that will take place these next few weeks.

Orientation events

Information is coming next week on orientation and curriculum events. Each school is planning various events for families to meet their teachers and learn about the curricular expectations for the year. Stay tuned for details.

You can always find the latest news and updates on our reopening page at CHUH.org. Enjoy your weekend!

Sincerely,

Superintendent Liz Kirby
