Message to Families From Superintendent Kirby - August 3, 2020

August 3, 2020

Dear CH-UH Families,

I hope you all are having a great start to the new week. I’m writing to share some recent district updates and important information regarding the start of the school year.

Choosing an online model

As you know, the 20-21 school year will start remotely on September 2. If you selected one of the two online models (mySchool or Ohio Online, also known as “Full Online”) for your child using the Google Form we provided, you’ll move forward with these plans and do not need to do anything further at this time.

If you chose the blended or in-person model for your child, or if you were unable to submit a choice at all, your child will be automatically placed in the mySchool Online program.

However, if you are interested in learning more about the Ohio Online program, there is a virtual Parent Information Night tomorrow, August 4 at 6 p.m. Login information is below. If you decide that you prefer the full online program for your child for the first semester (September 2 through January 15), please email Alexis Ramsey at [email protected] with your child’s name, school and grade level.

In terms of how long our remote learning will last, I have consulted with District leadership and will bring a recommendation to the Board during their meeting tomorrow, August 4 at 7 p.m. You can watch the meeting live on our YouTube channel. We will also discuss the next steps concerning fall sports at that time.

Chromebook distribution began today, August 3

The District will be providing a Chromebook to every kindergarten through 12th grade student before the school year begins. Some families already had one Chromebook issued to them during our spring COVID-19 school closure, but our goal is to make sure that every student has their own device to be successful with online learning in the new school year.

The distribution schedule can be found hereRegardless of which school your child attends, you can attend any scheduled distribution to receive a computer. We ask that you please wear a mask for your safety and the safety of our staff.

New as of 8/4: An additional pickup time has been added to the schedule for Thursday, August 13 from 5 pm to 8 pm at Heights High School. Any CH-UH family can attend this pickup to receive their Chromebook(s).

Staff member tests positive

On July 30, we were notified that a member of our trades crew tested positive for COVID-19. The Cuyahoga County Health Department was notified of this positive test and informed us that they would trace and contact appropriate individuals according to their guidelines. The area in which the employee worked was carefully disinfected. The employee is currently resting and self-quarantining at home.

Preschool/PreK

CH-UH Preschool will operate virtually for the start of the 20-21 school year in accordance with the K-12 plan. Students who were registered can opt to participate by paying $106 per month, which will cover the technology, instruction, supplies, and resources, or choose to have a spot held for when our in person learning returns. Students who have special needs (IEP) can access the virtual program and services with no fee.

Staff will be in contact with families about their choice for participation. Chromebooks and at-home learning kits will be distributed to the families participating later in August at the Gearity Early Childhood Center, along with orientation materials. Contact Erin Hanna at [email protected] with questions.

I will be in touch again soon with more details. You can also find updates on our reopening page at CHUH.org

Sincerely,
Superintendent Liz Kirby
