Students Create Zines About Plagiarism

Student created zines about plagiarism

Sept. 20, 2019 -- Students in Dr. Donna Feldman’s two College Composition I courses began their study of plagiarism in the Media Center where they researched the topic. Using the research and their own experience, the juniors and seniors wrote zines, a small book, about how to avoid plagiarism and tips on how to use original work.

After completing the project, the College Composition students gave the publications to students in David Jurns’ freshman English class.

“It’s great for my students because they get a refresher on how to avoid plagiarism, and they are writing for an audience,” said Dr. Feldman. “The ninth-grade students in Mr. Jurns course will cover this material and it’s more relevant when the material is from current students.”

Jurns values the publications because they are student-generated. “My students appreciate that the information is coming from older, more experienced students,” he said.

The student-generated guides about how to avoid plagiarism will also be housed in the school’s Media Center.

The College Composition I and II courses are part of the College Credit Plus program and are an English course option for junior and senior students. The courses include a focus on the writing process and grant both high school and college credit.
