July 22, 2019 -- Señora Olivia Fatica’s AP Spanish students were treated to a special guest speaker on the last day of regular classes. Antonino Pereira, a student in the class, brought his abuelita (grandmother) to speak about her life in Argentina and her transition to life in the United States.

Part of a recent class activity included watching the movie Evita, about Eva Perón, the First Lady of Argentina. That prompted Antonino to ask Señora Fatica if he could bring his abuelita to talk to the class about her life in Argentina and her memory of the historic leader.

Señora Pereira was 10 years old when Perón died and remembers the news and her family's reaction to the event. She also talked about the similarities and differences between Argentina and the U.S. and about her family, the Argentinian heritage and culture and the beautiful places to visit there like Iguazú Falls.

As an extra special treat, Señora Pereira brought homemade galletas (cookies) for the students.

“Having a native speaker who is familiar with Spanish speaking culture is such a great experience for our students,” said Señora Fatica. “The students enjoyed speaking and listening to our guest Abuelita. They also loved the cookies!”

Noah Pereira, Anontino's brother and a freshman enrolled in Señora Carolyn Pavel’s Spanish 2 Honors class, visited Señora Fatica's class that day to hear his abuelita speak.

Señora Fatica invites other native Spanish speakers to contact her if they are interested in visiting her classroom to speak to the students.
